Call for papers (2nd call)
2nd Western Alaskan Interdisciplinary Science Conference and Forum
“Energizing Our Future”
Nome, Alaska April 7–9, 2009
Hosted by University of Alaska Fairbanks Northwest Campus and Bering Strait Development Council (ARDOR)
The first conference of this type, held in April 2008 in Dillingham, Alaska, brought together 120 scientists, educators, rural leaders, and subsistence hunters and gatherers to discuss science and issues relevant to western Alaska. The conference will highlight regional scientific efforts and traditional knowledge that provide an interdisciplinary approach to scientific inquiry and resource management. In addition to scientific sessions, the conference will include several workshops addressing topics relevant to life in rural western Alaska. Organizers welcome submissions from all individuals and organizations collecting data in western Alaska.

Abstract submission for scientific presentations or workshops
Abstracts for oral and poster presentations or workshops are invited and should be submitted before March 1, 2009, via e-mail to Claudia Ihl (ftci@uaf.edu) as either a PDF or Word attachment. Abstracts should be no more than 500 words for oral or poster presentations (15 minutes) and 1000 words for workshops (up to 1 hr 30 minutes), single-spaced, and should include the following information:
Abstracts for oral or poster presentations
- Author name, title, and institutional affiliation
- Presentation title
- Research question, methods, data, and results.
Abstracts for workshops
- Name of workshop leader and team members, their titles and institutional affiliation
- Workshop title
- A description of workshop activities, materials provided by the workshop team, other materials needed, anticipated length of workshop (up to 1 hr 30 min).
Notifications of proposal acceptance or denial will be sent by March 15th, 2009. If a proposal is accepted, the presenter must register for the conference in order to participate.
