  NAOKI TOJO (M.S., Fisheries)

Naoki Tojo
Age: 30

Hometown: Hiroshima, Japan

Degree: M.S., Fisheries

Year of expected graduation: 2004

Major Professor: Dr. Gordon Kruse

Briefly describe your graduate project: My project involves Pacific herring, Clupea pallasii, spawning and early life ocean survival. I hope to establish relationships among the physical and biological ocean conditions and herring spawning and early life survival for future model construction (Kruse 2002). I'll develop statistical relationships between ocean conditions and spawning location/timing, and statistical relationships between ocean conditions and herring egg condition. The study will analyze potential determinants of herring stock success.

Why did you choose UAF? Great project for my future work and well-established communication with faculties since working as a research assistant.

Favorite pastimes and hobbies: Accidentally floating with broken boat and a stubborn coworker to fix it on the Columbia River without radio for two nights.

Most interesting educational experience so far: Kissed by a coho salmon in Peterson Creek, Alaska.

Future plans: Contribute to oceanography and cultural education in Hokkaido, Japan.
