NOSB 1999 Research Project:
The decline of Steller sea lions

To what degree are the Steller sea lion (Eumetopias jubatus [Pinnipedia: Otariidae]) populations changing in the Gulf of Alaska and the Bering Sea, and why? Your document should explore the potential causes of the population changes, and determine and evaluate means to improve our understanding of the problem.

Each team is expected to attempt to cover all the pertinent scientific and socioeconomic aspects of the topic and correlate them. The use of local sources is encouraged in addition to the resources list that is provided. Include information on the magnitude of the changes and how Alaskan industries and communities are impacted.

The question is large and complex. Recommendations can be made on how to seek answers to parts of the question and which aspects are higher priorities than others. All recommendations made should follow logically from the material documented in the manuscript.
