Alaska Seafood Processing Leadership Institute (ASPLI)
The Alaska Seafood Processing Leadership Institute (ASPLI) is an intensive professional development program designed for mid-level managers, production foremen, plant supervisors, quality assurance leaders, and small processors who want to advance their careers in seafood processing.
The 2013–2014 Institute
Kodiak: October 29–November 6, 2013
Hands-on technical training in seafood processing at the University of Alaska Fairbanks Kodiak Seafood and Marine Science Center, and visits with local processors. Topics include the science of seafood, shelf life, quality and safety of Alaska's fishery products, product development, lean manufacturing, new processing technologies, and seafood marketing. Local plant managers will share their experiences in the seafood industry and their perspectives on management.
Anchorage: March 10–14, 2014
Leadership training, human resource development, business management and marketing. Attendees will learn from management consultants about effective communication, conflict resolution, and project planning and evaluation skills. Industry representatives from the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute and others will teach market trends, and staff from the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation will discuss seafood safety compliance.
Boston (optional): March 16–18, 2014
A guided visit to the Boston Seafood Show and field trips to secondary processors on the East Coast. The Boston Seafood Show, the largest marketing venue for seafood in the United States, will provide an opportunity to understand Alaska’s important role in the global seafood market. Participants will be assigned projects that require them to interact with vendors, seafood buyers, and sellers. After the show, participants will visit New Bedford seafood processors to learn about their innovations and challenges.
Over the winter, each participant will work with a mentor to identify and complete a project of interest to his or her company.
