Background

In 1990, the Alaska Fisheries Development Foundation and University of Alaska Sea Grant sponsored the International Conference on Fishery Byproducts. In the decade since, huge changes have occurred. At present the Alaska seafood industry harvests approximately 2 million metric tons of seafood for human seafood markets. Over 60% of the food fish caught in U.S. waters comes from Alaska. The amount of fish processing wastes generated from human food processing operations is in excess of 1.1 million metric tons annually. Fish byproduct utilization and fish waste disposal issues are more important than ever to the survivability and sustainability of fishing industries.

Many changes have occurred since the 1990 conference. These include:
  • New environmental concerns and regulations have changed the face of seafood harvesting and processing industries.
  • Advances in technology have increased the percentage of fish biomass used as human food and changed the character of seafood processing byproducts.
  • The world supply of fish meals and oils used for aquaculture and animal feeds has been volatile due to climatic changes that affect large industrial fisheries.
  • Fueled by advances in medical sciences, more fish oils and other functional foods derived from seafoods are consumed as human dietary components.
  • Technologists have been hard at work producing new secondary products for human, animal, and industrial uses from the byproducts of seafood processing.
  • New and improved methods are continually becoming available to address fish byproduct safety and processing issues.
With changes in supply, quality specifications, uses, markets, and transportation, it seems prudent to assemble a conference to review these changes and to project where we are headed. To this end we announce the 2nd International Seafood Byproduct Conference to be held in Anchorage, Alaska, 10–13 November 2002.
