BackgroundIn 1990, the Alaska Fisheries Development Foundation and University of Alaska Sea Grant sponsored the International Conference on Fishery Byproducts. In the decade since, huge changes have occurred. At present the Alaska seafood industry harvests approximately 2 million metric tons of seafood for human seafood markets. Over 60% of the food fish caught in U.S. waters comes from Alaska. The amount of fish processing wastes generated from human food processing operations is in excess of 1.1 million metric tons annually. Fish byproduct utilization and fish waste disposal issues are more important than ever to the survivability and sustainability of fishing industries.Many changes have occurred since the 1990 conference. These include:
ScheduleThe registration desk will be open 3:00–5:00 PM Sunday, November
10, in the lobby of the Captain Cook Hotel and again each day of the meeting
beginning at 8:00 AM. The program will begin at 9:00 AM Monday, November
11. There will be an "icebreaker" reception on Sunday, November 10 from
5:00–7:00 PM, where you can make new acquaintances and renew old
acquaintances, as well as a reception on Monday, November 11, at the conclusion
of the first day's meetings. Location and FacilitiesThe symposium will be held in Anchorage, the largest city in Alaska.
In November temperatures average 28° F and there is 9 hours of daylight.
There may be snow so come prepared.
RegistrationThe registration fee is $200.00 US if paid on or before October 1, 2002,
or $230.00 US if paid after October 1, 2002. The fee covers breakfast
on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, November 11–13; luncheon on Monday
and Tuesday, November 11 and 12; the "icebreaker" on Sunday, November
10; the reception on Monday, November 11; conference materials; and a
copy of the proceedings book. You are urged to register and pay your fees
in advance so that adequate materials are available. ProceedingsA comprehensive proceedings volume will be published after the conference by University of Alaska Sea Grant.
