Description

This research shows that molting commonly occurs in Tanner crab males 110-139 mm carapace width, after they copulate. The crabs do not have to be in a terminal instar or reach their maximum claw size to be mature enough to mate, as has been proposed by other researchers. Normal Tanner crab males reaching maturity at 110-115 mm carapace width can reproduce before growing to the 135-140 mm size that is harvestable in the Alaska fishery. Thus it is wise to continue to protect the small mature males from the fishery so they can breed. Journal of Crustacean Biology 15(4):686-692, 1995.
