Description

This paper is a review of biochemistry and genetics of toxin production by harmful algal bloom species. Research on algal toxins consists of (1) observations on the variability of toxin production by single species or within strains, (2) isotope studies that reveal the identity of the precursers to toxin compounds, (3) genetics of toxin production, and (4) pharmacological aspects of toxins. Developing an understanding of the enzymes and genes that synthesize toxins is an important next step.
