Increased development and transportation in the Arctic will bring many challenges and increased risk to the region, and new infrastructure and sustained investment will be needed to ensure the ecosystem is protected and managed sustainably. Understanding and minimizing risks in the Arctic will require improved coordination within the federal government and with the State of Alaska and tribal, regional, and local governments.
This workshop report describes action items for several intra-agency work groups from NOAA, BOEM, and BSEE. Members of the work groups are making progress toward ensuring that energy and mineral resource development in the Arctic will be done with minimal risk to the environment.
