On the Kenai Fjords field trip Sunday, we'll stop and shut down the engines in front of this glacier for 20 minutes or so and eat some lunch while we listen to the guttural groans of the glacier--and hopefully see some big chunks of ice calve from the 300-foot high glacier face.

Seward-1 An up-close look at Exit Glacier, one of Alaska's 100,000 glaciers. Exit Glacier is easily accessible by road, conveniently located a ten-mile drive off the Seward Highway about six miles north of Seward. Early explorers named it "Exit" because it provided an exit from the Harding Ice Field above. If trail conditions permit, you can take a steep, round-trip hike to the ice field in one day, where you'll see a panoramic expanse of ice and snow stretching to the horizon. (That's Kurt's mom and sister strolling in a typical August rain).
