Proving once again that Sea Grant communicators are nothing if not versatile,
Kurt Byers combined his artistic and carpentry skills to create an outdoor
sign for the Seward Marine Education Center. A sign was a top priority
identified by Oregon Sea Grant's Vicki Osis when she visited Seward to
conduct a needs assessment for the facility. Here Kurt works on a plastic
cutout of a humpback whale (top) that would adorn the sign, and (below)
peels protective paper off the clear Lexan face to unveil his handiwork.
Alas, 80 mph winds snapped the sign off its two 4X6 inch hardwood posts
later that year when Seward Marine Center staff forgot to remove the sign
from its frame prior to the winter storm season. Oh well.

With advice from Oregon Sea Grant's Vicki Osis
and information gleaned from a visit Kurt made to Georgia Sea Grant Extension's
Brunswick Station and the University of Georgia Aquarium, Sea Grant Communications
revamped displays and created new interpretive exhibits for the Seward Marine
Education Center. These are some of the marine mammal panels created by
Susan Gibson, Kurt Byers, and Becky Carver, which feature information from
our marine mammal field guide. |

A children's activity station is a popular feature
of the Seward Marine Education Center. Melanie Nakken, Seward Marine Education
Center coordinator, develops activities for children and tends aquarium
tanks stocked with live critters indigenous to local waters. |

The Seward Marine Education Center has a large theater-style auditorium
where marine-oriented videos are shown in the summer. The marine mammal
paper sculptures that decorate the walls were created by local school
kids and donated to the center. This is where we will meet with our Sea
Grant Extension Assembly colleagues on Tuesday afternoon.
