Donations to AFIRM by Alaska Sea Grant
Alaska Sea Grant has raised $5,800 (ten percent of its product sales from November 1, 2005, to April 30, 2006) to be donated to the Alaska Fishing Industry Relief Mission Inc. (AFIRM) to help the U.S. Gulf Coast fishing communities devastated during the 2005 hurricane season. AFIRM, a newly formed nonprofit charity, was established by Alaska fishermen and seafood processors as a way for the Alaska fishing industry to help Gulf Coast fishermen recover as quickly as possible.
In a letter describing the formation of AFIRM, Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski wrote, "Alaska and the Gulf Coast are the two most productive sources of wild seafood in the U.S. We have much more in common than in competition. We believe that anything that weakens the domestic seafood industry weakens the economic and social fabric of both our regions."
