Notes from an IPY cruise
In summer 2007, Nome Marine advisory agent Heidi Herter took part in a research cruise from Dutch Harbor to Nome. Read her journal entries as she reports on scientists and their work aboard the Oshoro maru.
New Web site launched: Future Alaskans in Fisheries and Marine Science
The science and management of Alaska's coastal and ocean resources provide employment opportunities in rural communities. Learn how you can pursue this exciting and rewarding career through a new Web site, Future Alaskans in Fisheries and Marine Science, dedicated to helping Alaska's coastal residents become fishery and marine scientists. Hosted by the University of Alaska Fairbanks School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences.
Sea Week curriculum grant funded
The Alaska Department of Education and Early Development has granted $194,000 per year for three years to Alaska Sea Grant for updating and expanding the Alaska Sea/River Week Curriculum guides, which were published by Alaska Sea Grant in the 1980s. See the May issue of Fishlines for more.
A sample of recent activities
Below are just a few of our past activities. If you see an activity here that interests you, or know of an appropriate event for us to participate in, please let us know.
- Alaska Sea Grant staffed a booth and offered educational activities at the Alaska Oceans Festival 2006.
- Alaska Sea Grant (ASG) had a booth at the Kachemak Bay Shorebird Festival.
- ASG, Katrin Iken (SFOS faculty) and Brenda Konar (SFOS faculty) hosted a group of 20 Chugach School District homeschool students in grades K-2, plus about 10 adults and a few siblings. They viewed the intertidal video Life on the Beach: Among Friends and Anemones and marine mammal materials, then went into the lab to view and touch a number of intertidal animals.
- ASG set up a publications display at Weller Elementary School, Fairbanks.
- ASG staffed booths at the Sitka WhaleFest and the Pioneer Park (Fairbanks) Holiday Bazaar.
- Torie Baker, Marine Advisory agent in Cordova, staffed a booth at the Cordova Annual Christmas Craft and Bazaar.
- Torie had a bird display at the Cordova Shorebird Festival.
- Kathy Kurtenbach gave a short talk about ASG educational publications, videos and posters at the Woodriver Elementary School staff meeting, Fairbanks.
