Large eddies, generated off Yakutat in the Gulf of Alaska are assumed to be one mechanism that spreads coastal freshwater offshore. Northern GOA eddies are among the longest-lived eddies in the world’s ocean (more than 5 years). In spring 2007, the coldest water temperatures in the northern GOA in about 35 years were recorded. In 2008 and 2009, winter conditions appear to be the same. How is this happening and what are possible affects on fish returns this summer? Come hear about UAF research into ocean eddies, the recent cooling and their impact on fish abundances in our backyard.
