Barrier Jets are a significant and surprisingly common feature of the winds in the northern Gulf of Alaska. However, until recent years they often went undetected. Advancements in technology including satellite borne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and high-resolution weather models have allowed for better detection and understanding of these weather features. A better understanding of barrier jets can mitigate their potentially high impact to mariners.
