The Alaska Young Fishermen’s Summit (AYFS), a nationally recognized event, helps new commercial fishermen gain skills to effectively run a successful business, and gives them the opportunity to develop professional networks.
The fifth summit will be held in December 2013. To date, more than 240 fishermen from 45 ports throughout Alaska have attended AYFS.
What participants get out of the summit
Entrants into Alaska’s commercial fisheries often pursue their dream with limited knowledge on how to navigate the increasingly complex world of commercial fishing business, regulatory issues, and markets.
AYFS includes four topics vital to a new fisherman’s success:
- The nuts and bolts of managing the financial aspects of a successful fishing business
- Participation in the fisheries regulatory process
- The role of Alaskan seafood in the world marketplace
- Understanding of science and management processes key to our sustainable fisheries
A fifth key goal is to give new fishermen the opportunity to network with each other and established industry leaders.
Examples of past agendas and industry speakers can be found at www.marineadvisory.org/ayfs.
Why donations are so helpful
Our participants are just starting in their businesses and often have to travel to the event, so we keep the registration fees artificially low. Your donations help subsidize their participation.
For this reason, contributions like yours are well-acknowledged in printed conference materials, our conference website, and our Facebook page. Gifts are tax-deductible, and donors can opt out of further contact from the university if desired.
