Marine Safety
Students at Dimond High School in Anchorage learn how to don a survival suit and get into a life raft.Alaska has the highest rates of water fatalities and injuries in the United States among both recreational and commercial boaters. The Marine Advisory Program spearheaded efforts to improve fishing vessel safety in the 1980s, leading to the establishment of the Alaska Marine Safety Education Association (AMSEA). AMSEA has created a network of marine safety instructors across Alaska who work with students, teachers, fishermen, and subsistence and recreational boaters. MAP's role in marine safety includes involvement on the AMSEA board, marine safety instruction, and production of publications and videos.
