Transient Alterations in Neurotransmitter Levels during a Critical Period of Neural Development in Coho Salmon (Onchorhynchus kisutch)

Description

For coho salmon, this is the first report of surges in neurotransmitter content in the brain during parr-smolt transformation. Parr-smolt transformation is a critical period of brain development during which olfactory imprinting on the natal stream takes place. It occurs in coho salmon about 18 months after hatching, just before the fish leave the stream and enter the ocean for an 18-month odyssey. Brain Research 742:339-342, 1996.
