Description
The authors found that for age-0 Pacific halibut along Kodiak Island, the predominant prey was crustaceans with an occasional polychaete and mollusk. The diet varied with fish size, capture location, depth, and substrate. The results could indicate halibut feeding preference, or changes in prey availability with different location and habitat. Diet studies such as this are important because, as for all fishes, early life stages of halibut are highest in mortality, and early growth may be a factor in determining year-class strength.
