Impacts of Climatic Change and
Fishing on Pacific Salmon Abundance over the Past 300 Years
Authors: B.P. Finney, I. Gregory-Eaves, J. Sweetman, M.S.V.
Douglas, and J.P. Smol |
| The authors used lake sediment records of d15N
to reconstruct sockeye salmon abundance in Alaska over the past 300 years.
Marked shifts in populations occurred over decades during this period,
and some large changes are related to climate change. Variations in salmon
returns due to climate or harvesting can have strong impacts on sockeye
productivity where adult salmon carcasses are important nutrient sources.
