Influence of Carcass-Derived Nutrients on Sockeye Salmon Productivity of Karluk Lake, Alaska: Importance in the Assessment of an Escapement Goal

Add to cart

Description

The authors evaluated historical spawner-recruit data and recent limnology data to develop an escapement goal for maximum sustainable yield of sockeye salmon. For Karluk Lake, findings suggest an escapement goal of about one million fish to optimize salmon production, with equal proportions of early and late run spawners. There is likely a positive feedback mechanism in escapement percent, primarily due to nutrients from spawner carcasses. North American Journal of Fisheries Management 18:743-763.
