Description

The increasing complexity of modern fishing vessels and their equipment makes it difficult to keep up on the details of maintenance and operation. Terry Johnson, Alaska Sea Grant Marine Advisory agent in Homer, offers suggestions in this series called Boatkeeper. Johnson has owned and operated fishing boats in Alaska for many years, and currently charters his 50-foot motor yacht in western Alaska. Articles are courtesy of Pacific Fishing Magazine. (All articles are also available online in PDF format.)

What others say

"For several years I've used several of Terry's articles as handouts when I conduct courtesy dockside exams here in Southeast Alaska. We board over 350 fishing vessels each season in Southeast Alaska so the articles have a wide audience."—Larry Snyder, U.S. Coast Guard

"I found it to be a good point of information for me… you put all in one nutshell with your article."—Joe Burke, Maritime Institute of Technology, Linthicum Heights, Maryland

"I've read all your articles in the Boatkeeper series and have found them very helpful and informative. Fifty percent of my task as an examiner is educating commercial fishermen; your articles have become standard handouts in all of our training."—Tim Clepper, USCG commercial fishing vessel examiner, Ketchikan
