Marine Mammal Interactions with the Salmon Drift Gillnet Fishery on the Copper River Delta, Alaska 1988–1989

PDF version: Marine Mammal Interactions with the Salmon Drift Gillnet Fishery [full text, 2.4 MB]

Description

Although drift net-related killings of pinnipeds decreased between 1978 and 1988, fishermen still aggressively protect their gear and catch. This study is part of an effort to assess the severity of the marine mammal-fishery problem and to find solutions. Recommendations are made for the development of nonlethal deterrents to scare hungry mammals away, for training fishermen in live-release techniques to remove sea otters from fishing gear, and for the continued use of at-sea observers.
