Description

"Alaska's Fishing Communities: Harvesting the Future," a two-day conference held in 2006, focused on how fishermen, community residents, and local governments can work to ensure continuity of a vibrant fishing economy. Recognizing that loss of community access to fisheries is equivalent to a local business shutting down, participants emphasized (1) government-implemented programs, and (2) increased education to enable retiring fishing business owners to transfer assets inside the community. Solutions lie in creative financing, crewmembers as part owners, customized solutions for each community, recognizing rights of small-scale fishing communities to resources, and involving fishermen in management.
